Probably the most common question I’m asked during the working day is "What is the cost of a website?" This question drives me nuts because I feel, as the 'expert', I should be able to give an answer quite easily but I can't. The problem I have is the inference that a website for a business is simply a cost and not an investment or an asset.
In a recent
survey of small businesses when asked the question “What are the main
objectives of your website?” the largest percentage response was
“None”. So it should hardly be a surprise when these same people
complain that their “website doesn’t do anything for my business”. No
wonder people use the word cost of a website when they mean price.
The
fact is if you gave a blank cheque to a web designer they would have
great fun spending lots of your money, but if you don’t have an online
business strategy plan you might as well throw your money into a deep,
dark hole. Indeed it's worse than that because not only will you be
spending money for no return you could also be missing a lot of
opportunities you would have got if you’d done the job properly. You
could even be putting potential customers off with a poor web presence.
In
fact, irrespective of price, if you have a good sales and marketing
strategy to go alongside a well constructed website you should profit
from the investment. However if you fall into the trap of just bunging
up a website with no marketing plan or sales strategy it could prove to
be very costly indeed.
