Social Media, What?

Social Media, What?

This article was written by Rob Jones

These days it's impossible to go through a day without hearing the words Facbook or Twitter mentioned, it's everywhere and there's no escaping it! So read on and you too will soon be entering the world of social media and reaping it's rewards.

The first hurdle you have to overcome is that social media is just for teenagers. Yes, it was designed for them but over time it has become a lot more sophisticated and it's become very hard to find someone who hasn't got an account, no matter how old you are.

The second hurdle is that social media is just a collection of mundane thoughts and pictures from "that drunken weekend". Yes, it can be but you have the power to control who your friends with and who your following. So if Bill is continuely annoying you by announcing his every movement then you have the power to hide or delete him, simple.

So, we discovered that just about everyone uses social media and that you can control your audience, now what?

Well, where there's masses of people you can be sure that businesses aren't far behind. After all, your reaching a huge audience with very little effort (and here comes the best bit!) and it's all completely free! Now what other kind of marketing can you say costs you £0?

Now, for reaching your audience, this can be done through a status. A status? What's that I hear you ask? If your familiar with Facebook or Twitter then you've probably got the knack of writing something in 140 characters or less down to a fine art. This is your status. This can be about anything you want but if you really want to get the best out of it, then make sure it's about something useful and relevant, otherwise your in danger of being hidden or deleted.

If your really clever then include a link to certain relevant pages on your website. Not only are you then gaining people's attention but your also creating traffic to your website, which in turn makes it more likely someone will buy your services.

The whole point of businesses getting involved in social media is to keep your name out there. Take celebrities for example, just about every one of them has a Twitter account. This gives them a huge chance to reach a massive audience with little effort, after all, if they're not getting their name out there then their fame will soon drop. Ok, so you may not be a celebrity but the same principles apply. It's all about getting your name out there and providing useful information.

But wait! I know what your thinking - I've set up all my social media accounts, this means I have to spend half my day checking on every single one of them? Wrong! Here at MyWebEdge headquarters we've found a way to cut out all the hard work, write a status once and get it published on all your social media accounts with one click!

So next time you hear the words Facebook or Twitter you might want to sit up and pay attention because you could have just missed another sale!

Bonus tips:

1. Get a head start on your friend list by importing your database of contacts.

2. Make sure you write a status atleast every other day, but make sure you don't over do it, no one likes a spammer do they! Experiment with posting statuses at different times of the day to see which get the most responses.

3. Set aside 10 minutes every other day to interact with other people, leave them a comment, share a picture, the main point is to interact with them. If you don't interact with anyone, they won't interact with you.

4. Remember to continue to grow your audience. Spend 10 minutes once a week adding new friends, that way you'll reach more new people.

5. Find your voice. Discover what works best for you in terms of status content. Perhaps lot's of tips get the most responses, maybe the latest news does better. There's no hard and fast rules, just make sure it's useful!
